The medieval chess pieces from the Scottish island of Lewis are among our most popular collections. They give us fascinating insights into the international connections of western Scotland and the growing popularity of chess in medieval Europe.

The eleven chess pieces on display in the Museum of Scotland were part of a large hoard buried on Lewis. The hoard contained 93 gaming pieces in total, including at least four chess sets as well as pieces from other games. The chess pieces were probably made in the late 12th or early 13th century in Norway.

Model information: produced by Dr Hugo Anderson-Whymark, 2019. 4776 25 mp images. Canon EOS 750D with Canon 60mm macro lens. Low resolution: Each piece 75000 polygons with 1024x1024 pixel texture. For higher resolution see individual models.

Why are these not downloadable? There's models from the British museum for download but not here? Surly as the Scottish National Museum it should be from here? ;)

Lovely models! Not entirely sure why National Museums Scotland doesn't make these downloadable? Would be a great resource in the hands of creative people and could only help to encourage engagement in Scotland's history, culture and heritage.

@nationalmuseumsscotland I'd also request that you consider making these downloadable please! Being stuck at home and trying to learn chess for the first time it would be incredible to learn with these pieces. Thanks 🙂
