La prise de la Bastille, which took place on Tuesday July 14, 1789 in Paris, is one of the inaugural and emblematic events of the French Revolution. This day, during which the Bastille is stormed by rioters, is, in the historiographical tradition, considered as the first major intervention of the Parisian people in the course of the Revolution and in French political life.
The siege and the surrender of the royal fortress are part of a period of government vacuum, economic crisis and political tension in favor of the meeting of the States General and their proclamation by the third party in the Constituent Assembly. The agitation of the Parisian people is at its height following the dismissal of Necker (announced on July 12 by the journalist Camille Desmoulins) and because of the presence of mercenary troops on the outskirts of the city.
