More model informationFor the first time in Sheffield’s history, excavations have revealed two whole cementation furnaces beneath a single chimney. Two narrow rectangular voids, one for each furnace can be seen, these are the remains of the ash pits which lay at the very bottom of the furnace. The furnace was built into a large sandstone structure similar to remains of the castle walls found elsewhere on the site. The courtyard surface of the castle has survived between the two furnaces.
Away from the furnace, stone walls and cellar steps can be seen, these were elements of 18th century housing. Elsewhere on site these houses contain the re-used fabric of the castle, and the same could be true here.
