More model informationAfter the slighting of the castle, this area of Sheffield took on many new identities. During the 18th and 19th centuries, slaughterhouses and workers housing were packed in cheek by jowl on the former line of the moat and across the wider site.
The gennel (or alleyway) follows the curve of the medieval moat. Tiny blindback workers’ housing with flagstone floors developed next to the gennel. On the opposite side, remains of a large, lozenge-shaped room form the cold storage area for the slaughterhouse’s produce. Looking closely, the stone windowsill is still visible, as well as fragments of the wooden window frame.
