“In 1915, Coca-Cola sent out a call for a new bottle design. When the Root Glass Company received the company’s brief, president Chapman J. Root sent bottle designer Earl R. Dean and auditor Clyde Edwards to the local library to seek inspiration. Unable to find images of what they believed to be two of Coca-Cola’s ingredients – coca leaf and kola nut – they stumbled upon an illustration of a cocoa pod in the Encyclopædia Britannica. Although cocoa isn’t found in Coca-Cola, the company incorporated its bulbous shape and ribbed exterior into their original design.”
