USS Pollux and USS Truxtun ran aground on seacliffs between St. Lawrence and Lawn, Newfoundland. They were sailing for the US Naval Station at Argentia in a February snowstorm and gale in 1942. Pollux ran agreound on Lawn Head and 93 US Navy sailors lost their lives to drowning or exposure. However 103 sailors were rescued by the heroic actions of people from Lawn and St. Lawrence. USS Pollux (AKS-2) was a US Navy supply ship that carried one 5-inch gun and four 3-inch guns. This gun is believed to be one of a pair mounted near the bow of the ship.
