This hybrid 34 string Gothic/Celtic Harp is a prototype made from laser cut Paulownia timber. Paulownia (Paulownia tomentosa) is native to east Asia & is used in the making of Japanese Koto, among many other things. In Japan it’s known as Kiri & is highly sought after. It’s very light & strong - having one of the best strength-to-weight ratios of any wood. The finished harp would be impregnated with Everdure to harden the timber & then sealed with epoxy resin. The rail for the strings is carbon fiber & epoxy glued to the soundboard for strength - with brass eyelets glued in for the strings to thread through. The sharping levers are fabricated from 3mm Solomon Ebony laser cut & laminated with a 1mm brass pin for the lever to pivot on the base. The lever base is secured to the neck with 14mm black pan-head phillips screws. This version of the gothic harp is dyed purple, & other colours will be available too. The finished harp should weigh about 5kg. Uploaded by orbytnz December 2019.
