The “Virgen del Carmen” Grotto is a niche built with river stones, concrete, and adobe by the people of El Calvario town. This construction is part of the Maria May School facade. The grotto, shaped as an arch, has a wood frontispiece. The sculptures’ niche has a concrete base decorated with flagstones. An iron fence, encircled by adobe bricks, safeguard the image of the Virgin Mary in her “El Carmen” advocacy.
By the half of the XX century, people from El Calvario adopted the “Virgen del Carmen” (Carmen’ Virgin) a Marian Advocacy, as their spiritual patron for the community. On July 16, 1980, El Calvario had their first celebration for their Patronage, “La Virgen del Carmen”. This grotto is one of the 9 urban symbols chosen by this community. It is located on the left side of the Maria May School’s facade.
