This reconstruction is based on a Fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) MRI scan sequence. The ventricles are in light blue. The FLAIR White Matter Hyperintensities (WMH) are in red. Sometime you will see hyperintensities with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) or Parkinson disease (PD). This person did not have either of these diseases. They were involved in a motor vehicle accident (MVA). Even though they do not have the disease they do do have similar symptoms and as they get older the effects worsen.

For more information you can goto this article “Cognitive impairments associated with medial temporal atrophy and white matter hyperintensities: an MRI study in memory clinic patients”
