The C1 transverse process (1) and posterior arch (8) are exposed by mobilizing the muscles (levator scapulae (7), superior (10) and inferior (9) oblique mm.). The C2 nerve root (2) is revealed passing the V3 segment (vertical portion) of the vertebral artery (3).
