Thanks to the Apple II, the 5.25-inch drive became the dominant size for floppy disks. Most CP/M-80 PCs in the late 70s and early 80s used this drive. The first IBM PC in 1981 offered one or two drives with a capacity of 160 kilobytes each.
The floppy disk was the main way to store data portably in the early 80s. Initially, the drives had only one head to read and write data, but soon they added another one. This allowed the IBM XT PC in 1983 to use double-sided disks with 360 kilobytes of space.
IBM launched the IBM Advanced Technology (AT) computer in 1984. This model featured a high-density 5.25-inch drive that could handle disks with up to 1.2 megabytes of data.
