5MT9943: Badger Canteen3D Model
This ceramic canteen, from the Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum, was found in a small unit pueblo (5MT9943) in the far southwestern corner of Colorado. The pueblo in which it was found was occupied on two separate occasions, first during the Pueblo II period (ca. AD 1075-1125) and again during the middle to late Pueblo III period (ca. AD 1225-1275).The vessel was associated with a Pueblo II mealing room. Its effigy form appears to represent a badger or a dog. The loops on either side, which apparently held a fiber handle, exhibit extensive use-wear, indicating the object’s long use-life.
Just one of the many thousands of ceramic, lithic, botanical, soil and pollen collections made during the Ute Mountain Ute Irrigated Lands project and housed at the museum, the “badger canteen” provides a glimpse into the vast research potential of the collections managed by the Bureau of Land Management at this unique research facility and museum.
