More model informationThe cat was the sacred animal of Bastet, a goddess who was primarily worshipped at Bubastis in the Nile delta. Votive statuettes like this one became popular in the Late period, representing the goddess in her animal form. This statuette was hollow cast using the lost-wax method (although the slightly deformed shape of the body indicates some unfamiliarity with the technique), and was made intentionally silvery by adding arsenic to the copper alloy.
