In Arabic theology, people believed in creatures called ‘Jinn’. They are able to physically exist in our world through the possession of a physicality that belongs to earth. This is frowned upon by God and puts Jinn at lower standing in God’s eyes. My main character is a young girl. She is orphaned. A common occupation from the government is that of a ‘musaharati’ (Waker of People). This person wanders the streets of the city at dawn and beats a drum to wake the people up for dawn prayer. She encounters a Jinn when she gets this job possessing the drum given to her. The Jinn is trying to raise their standing in the eyes of God. The girl knows the city well, she is young and has a susceptible mind. They can use her. At night, the Jinn can possess her to fight other Jinn possessing other souls on earth to cut off their physical tie to this world - helping keep God’s order In return, the Jinn gives the girl advantages during the day using their magical abilities to further the girl’s social standing.
