Here is an ammonite of the genus Acanthoceras from the Late Cretaceous of Le Mans. Ammonites are cephalopod molluscs, like cuttlefish and Nautilus. However, ammonites completely disappeared from marine ecosystems 66 million years ago, during the same mass extinction that claimed the lives of most dinosaurs of the time!

This specimen, ULg PA 3103, is housed in the collections of Fossil Animals at the Université de Liège, Belgium http://eddylab.weebly.com/collections.html
