This quillwork tea caddy is from the collections of the The Mariners’ Museum and Park (Accession Number 1998.0008). It was 3D scanned with a NextEngine Desktop 3D Scanner. Protective glass covering the main image distorted it in this scan. The original image is quite clear. This object was 3D scanned to expand the digital offerings of the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities Encyclopedia Virginia related to slavery in Virginia. The accession record description reads:
Quillwork (rolled paper) 6 sided Tea Caddy, possibly made by a prisoner of war. Caddy features a miniature ivory panel inset in center and painted with designs of two man-of-war vessels and two chained Negroes. Images modeled in wax relief kneeling with legend of “O Lord, Set Us Free”. It is believed to be from the late 18th century.
