In the Nara period, Kokubunji (provincial temples) were built all over Japan, based on the idea of protecting the country with the Buddhism. Shimotsukekokubunji was built in Tochigi prefecture, which was called Shimotsukenokuni back then. The roofs of temples in those days were covered with a combination of round and flat tiles, with round and flat eaves tiles with patterns on the edges. This tile has a rengemon (lotus pattern), and this pattern is an image of the lotus flower, which is related to Buddhism. Shimotsukekokubunji has been renovated several times, and this tile is from the earliest buildings.
