Acacia catechu is a small thorny tree that grows up to 12 m tall. It has feathery leaves and yellow, fluffy flowers. An extract of the heartwood is obtained by boiling; when the liquid cools and dries it produces a dark brown solid known as cutch. Extracts from the plant are used as astringents and antibiotics to treat diarrhoea, mouth inflammation and boils. Extracts from the plant are also used for tanning and dyeing.
