Accomac3D Model
Originally built as the Virginia Lee in 1928, the vessel operated as a car ferry between Cape Charles and Norfolk, Virginia. In 1942, the ship was requisitioned by the U.S. government to provide convoy duty during World War II. After the war, the vessel was reregistered and renamed Holiday, and operated as a ferry running between Boston, Plymouth, and Provincetown, Massachusetts. While transiting to Houston, Texas, in 1950 for a new operation, the ship was damaged in a storm off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. Once again, it was sold and overhauled, this time to make it capable of hauling 70 cars and 1,200 passengers. It was renamed Accomac and operated between Kiptopeke and Little Creek, Virginia. A fire in 1964 took the ship permanently out of commission and around 1973 it was brought to Mallows Bay. Accomac is now one of the most prominent shipwrecks within Mallows Bay - Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary. Model by Ian Dunshee/NOAA.
