More model informationActinolite is a member of the amphibole group of minerals and has the formula Ca₂(Mg,Fe++)₅Si8O₂₂(OH)₂. In this specimen it displays the characteristic acicular crystals, but it sometimes forms as more stumpy prisms, or even in an asbestiform habit. Note that the first part of the name ‘actino’ is a prefix meaning ‘radiating needles’ (from the Greek ‘actis’ meaning ‘ray’) - that habit is apparent in this specimen, which displays many stellate (star-shaped) clusters of radiating needles. The white matrix of the specimen is mostly calcite.
