Ad-Deir Monastery, Petra, Jordan3D Model
Ad-Deir, or the Monastery, is a monumental Nabataean structure carved into the heights of Jebel ad-Deir, dating broadly to the 1st century CE. Dominating the surrounding landscape, its massive façade—nearly 50 metres high—showcases the characteristic blend of Nabataean and Hellenistic design.
The complex includes a large forecourt cut into the plateau and a spacious interior chamber likely used for ritual or commemorative purposes. Although no inscriptions confirm its function, its scale and placement suggest a significant ceremonial role. Today, Ad-Deir remains one of Petra’s most iconic landmarks, embodying the city’s architectural sophistication and enduring cultural presence.
