In the late 2020s Russia found itself in a vulnerable military position, possessing relatively few surviving modern systems. One of the areas where this was most apparent was in advanced surface ships. The Admiral Nakhimov, which was already undergoing an extensive refit, was chosen as the platform for Russia’s next generation battlecruiser. Partly due to the time and cost that could be saved over designing an entirely new ship and because its currently planned upgrades were already looking outdated by the late 2020s. The program called for an entirely redesigned superstructure and bridge as well as a new powerful nuclear reactor powering a modern digital electric power distribution system to allow for multiple railguns and direct energy weapons. The new Admiral Nakhimov would give the Russian people some renewed confidence in the armed forces. And while the country was still undergoing a turbulent political revival, the future of the Navy would use it as a fresh start to move towards the future.
