Adonis (fig leaf)

Plaster fig-leaf modesty covering removed, in 2019, from a plaster cast of Adonis (CAG.0913) in the collection of Crawford Art Gallery, Cork.

The marble statue from which this cast is taken was found near Rome in 1780, when it joined the Vatican collection and where it remains. The identity of this divinity has never been perfectly ascertained, but his grace and youth have indicated to many that it is indeed Adonis, beloved of Aphrodite.
