More model informationAepyornis is an extinct genus of giant flightless birds that lived in Madagascar until about 1,000 years ago. Often referred to as “elephant birds,” these remarkable birds could reach heights of over 3 meters and weigh up to 500 kilograms. Aepyornis had large, robust bodies and small wings, making them incapable of flight. They are believed to have been herbivorous, feeding on fruits and vegetation in their forested habitats. Fossils of Aepyornis provide important insights into the unique megafauna of Madagascar and the ecological dynamics of the island before human arrival.
This model was realized by Glenda Cantale during the Universal Civil Service (SCU) at the Genoa University.
