Ai Weiwei’s recent work has pivoted towards injustices outside of China. In his, In Search of Humanity exhibition, Weiwei presented this metal door found on the Syrian border while doing filming work. This is a “ready made” work of art - in other words, works of art derived from a manufactured (or found) object presented as something greater than its intended (utilitatian) use. This unwieldy metal gate has bullet holes, which bear witness to the brutal war In Syria. While this gate no longer functions as shield from incoming gun fire, it is an obvious commentary on the ongoing poliitial violence in the region.
