This marble race car was previously on view at the Albertina Modern in Vienna, Austria. This seems to be a bit of a sarcastic take on Ai Weiwei’s opinion about the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). In short, he likens the CCP to a marble toy car or big wheels. The marble was sourced from the imperial quarry; i.e, the same marble quarry used for Mao Zedong’s tomb in Tiananmen Square. Ai Weiwei advocates for democratic reforms and freedom of expression, and many of his works can be seen and interpreted through a political and social lens. Ai Weiwei has been imprisoned for his often performative (and steadfast) resistance to the Chinese Communist Party and is currently living in exile in Montemor-o-Novo, Portugal. His exhibition, In Search of Humanity, covered such wide-ranging topics as technological change, politics in China, the moral implications of immigration, globalization, and the rise of nationalism.
