The Air Rescue Service was established to provide a Local Base Rescue (LBR) to supplement and extend rescue and firefighting capabilities at USAF bases assigned a flying mission. The Huskey helicopter on alert could be airborne in approximately one minute with the FSK hanging beneath. The FSK weighed 1,000 lbs and could produce seven hundred gallons of firefighting foam. The crew consisted of Pilot, Co-Pilot, Flight Engineer, Medical Technician and two Airborne Rescue Specialist/Firefighters. The FSK held 78.5 gal of water, 5 gal of firefighting foam, and a section of 1.5 inch by 150ft fire hose with foam nozzle. The FSK contained a steel sphere pressurized to 3,000PSI, once charged the FSK provided one minute thirty seconds of firefighting capability, producing 700 gal of foam. The objective was to rescue the crew members and not extinguish all fire involvement. The Huskey’s rotor wash aided in controlling the fire.
