Development of an improved version of the AK-74 began in 1987, and full production began in 1991. Apart from some minor improvements, these rifles feature jet black synthetic folding stocks, pistol grips and handguards. The fiberglass filled polyamide is shaped like the fixed stock of the AK-74, and the stock is grooved like the AKS-74. In addition, the AK-74M uses a reinforced muzzle device and dust cover. AK-74M was prepared to become a standard rifle in the late Soviet Union, and was adopted as a standard rifle by the Russian Federation after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
