Plasma proteins, mainly albumin, act as carriers for drug molecules. Albumin levels can vary with age, liver disease, and nutritional status. Drug molecules bound to albumin stay in the bloodstream and are pharmacologically inactive, while unbound drug molecules can leave the bloodstream and act on body cells.
