More model informationThis is a fossil shell of the marine snail Alcithoe arabica collected from Kai Iwi Beach (Wanganui series, Castlecliffian, approximately 1.63 – 0.34 Ma). Alcithoe is a diverse genus within the family of volutes (Volutidae). Currently there are many extant species of Alcithoe classified in New Zealand and New Caledonia, and there is also a rich fossil record. Alcithoe arabica is believed to be an apex molluscan predator and strict carnivore (description by Felix Vaux, http://www.massey.ac.nz/~strewick/Felix.htm).
