More model informationThe dentary is the tooth-bearing bone of the lower jaw. It is long and somewhat cylindrical in cross section. The rostral teeth are conical and sharp whereas the caudal, or molariform teeth are more blunt. The mandibular symphysis connects the right and left dentaries together as a complex joint formed by ligaments and Meckel’s cartilage. The medial surface of the dentary is excavated by the Meckelian groove and capped by the splenial. The lateral surface is dotted by numerous neurovascular foramina, many of which connect to dome pressure receptors in the skin. Caudally, the dentary forms part of the intramandibular joint and the rim of the external mandibular fenestra.
