During the mating season early in the year, the males exhibit dark-blue colouring on their backs and their bellies are bright orange. Alpine newts typically inhabit forests with good access to water in hilly to mountainous regions. In Greece it is found at high altitudes (1,200-2,200 m) such as the Dragon lake of Tymphe and Smolikas mountain.
