The 198 ft schooner barge Alta was built in 1884 as a schooner and eventually converted to a schooner barge. On its final trip it was in tow of tug F.A. MEYERS, when its tow line broke stranding the ship in the rocky shallows of Grand Island where it was broken up by big waves. The crew spent a day clinging to the rigging until they were rescued by local fishermen. There is another portion of the wreck in deeper water that is missing from the model. The model was created from 640 30-migapixel images shot by Andrew Goodman on one fifteen minute dive.
