More model informationRiding Amazon and Barbarian
Pentellic marble, ca. mid 2nd century AD.
An Amazon, atop a rearing horse, battles a barbarian or Gaul, who attempts to deal a final blow before being trampled.
This sculpture is based on Hellenistic models from the second half of the 2nd century BC, and was found in the Imperial Villa at Anzio with another sculpture group of the same theme.
Amazons were an ancient tribe of female warriors, and are a popular image in ancient Greek and Roman art.
