About the Object
The 3-D model above depicts a distaff consisting of 24 amber discs that was found in a coffin along with cremated remains dating back to the 2nd Century A.D. in the Limburg province. Amber objects in this region have been dated from the Roman period onward. The distaffs have mostly been retrieved from the graves of the wealthy. They represent the life span of mortals and were left as an offering to allow the continuation of a person’s life thread in the afterlife.
