More model informationThis is the skull of an American crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos). Crows belong to the clade Neoaves, which includes the modern birds. Birds have some cranial traits that other animals like mammals don’t. This includes one of the jaw bones, the quadrate. In mammals, the quadrate bone has been repositioned away from the jaw and now serves as one of the bones in the middle ear. The quadrate bone in birds allows more mobility in skull and mandible (the primary jaw bone) . This increased mobility is referred to as “cranial kinesis”. Try directly comparing this skull to that of a mamal. See if you can identify the quadrate bone, and which direction it would help the mandible move.
