More model informationSkull fragment with 2 ossicones and bifid horn: Ampelomeryx ginsburgi, first described in Montreal-du-Gers (France) in 1995, is frequently referred to as the “deer-girafe” and is the size of a current deer and belongs to the fossil family of Paleomerycidae. The males’ heads carry two ossicons, bones of dermal origin, which weld laterally to the forehead, in lateral position above the orbits, and at the back of the skull, a large bifid horn is also the prerogative of the males. The thickening of the skull bones above the orbits shows that they certainly engaged in head-to-head rituals to seduce females during the rut season.
