More model informationEveryday life in Pontes, Roman Staines; a stamped amphora handle. Amphora fragments are found at most locations in Staines. At the Friends Burial Ground alone 62kg of amphora sherds were recovered. From its shape, this one would probably have belonged to an amphora used to transport olive oil. David Barker, who worked on the 1969 excavations in Staines, has remarked that the washing of amphora sherds formed a distinct oil slick on the water!
This amphora handle is now part of the education team’s loan box.
