Anchor of EICS Winterton, Salary Bay, Madagascar3D Model
This first draft was created in collaboration with the Marovany Association, Madagascar, as part of the Rising from the Depths project.
This 3.1m long anchor (incomplete) was the last hope of the English East India Company Ship Winterton, built 1782 at Blackwall, London, and wrecked at Salary Bay, Madagascar in 1792 on passage to India . The anchor still stands in the position it caught and subsequently broke, causing the ship to once again strike the reef and break up over the coming days.
The MAT are supporting the Morovany Association recording and protecting three wrecks located on the reefs near Salary Bay.
This first draft of the broken Winterton anchor hs been prepared for today’s presentation to the local community leaders, Sunday 15th May 2022. The feature was recorded on May 9th, 2022, with additional dives locating the detached anchor ring on May 13th.
