Anchor scour through an archaeological site3D ModelNoAI
A docking timber carrier dragged its anchor through the middle of this underwater archaeological site, destroying and displacing many artifacts. You can see the wavy pattern created by the flukes. The site is located in Scarborough Harbour, Tobago.
The wreckage on the seafloor is a mix of material from the 1677 Battle of Rockley Bay as well as other maritime disasters, including the hurricanes of 1790 and 1847 which, according to contemporary accounts, damaged or destroyed hundreds of vessels. These sites are threatened by dredging, construction, pilfering, and harbor traffic.
The disturbace seen here is simply more evidence that time is running out for Tobago’s unique underwater heritage sites.
An investigation of the area is being led by Dr. Kroum Batchvarov of the University of Connecticut. To learn more about this artifact, and dozens more discovered under the sea, visit http://tobagoshipwrecks.com/
