Ancient Egyptian Beer Jar

A large rough ware beer jar from the Egyptian site of Hierakonpolis dating to Late Naqada III. This jar features an intact strainer in the mouth of the vessel.

During the Naqada III Period, and into the Early Dynastic, Egyptian pottery assemblages become more homogenous. This may have been a reflection of increasingly centralised cultural and state authority. Large storage vessels and beer jars like this one are characteristic of the period.
