Description The Medici lions are a pair of marble sculptures of standing male lions with a sphere under one paw, looking to the side. They were required by Ferdinando I de’ Medici, for Villa Medici in Rome, to serve as majestic ornaments of the Villa’s garden staircase, the Loggia dei leoni.
The one here represented originates from an ancient roman marble that was first mentioned in 1594, by the sculptor Flaminio Vacca, who reported that it had been found in the via Prenestina in Rome.
