This type of anchor was used by the British and US navies during the late 18th and 19th centuries (Smith & Nutley 2000). The wooden stock and the ring at the end of the shank were replaced, respectively, by a metal stock and a shackle by the late 1830s. It is likely that the USS Somers (1846) carried two of these anchors. This model uis based on an illustration by Costell (1856, Treatise on Ship’s Anchors) published in an article by Smith y Nutley (2000).
