I recently came across this clip and decided to rebuild the engine in 3D. Not every detail is visible in the video, so there are minor differences. Also the connection for the compressed air to run the engine is missing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVuKp5M3de8
The animation is running at 1 revolution at 48 fps. One revolution here means, all parts are back in their original state: The gear ratio is 1:1.5 (20 teeth (cylinder-shaft) -> 25 -> 30 teeth (rocker-shafts)). When the mainshaft did a 360 degree rotation, the rocker-shaft is only at 240 degree, so to get back to the original state, the main shaft is doing 6 revolution which translates to 9 revolutions for the rocker-shaft.
There are 2 animations: - Run (Full model) - Run uncovered (Main engineblock, rocker-blocks and front cover are hidden, to expose the cylinder mechanics)
- At 0.1x speed the stroboscope effect won’t be visible on the gears
Model (subD modelling), Rigging and Skinning done in Maya. Textures in Substance Painter.
