This Ankoku Rishoto stands in front of the brocade evening bell on the left as you enter the main gate of Zuisenji Temple, Engakuji branch of the Rinzai sect in Nikaido, Kamakura City. Ankoku-ji Temple and Risho-to were built by the brothers Takauji Ashikaga and Naoyoshi Ashikaga, one pagoda for each country, in order to mourn the war dead, including Emperor Godaigo and others, at the recommendation of Muso Soseki of the Rinzai sect. It was almost completed in the middle of the Nanbokucho period, and with the fall of the Muromachi shogunate, Ankokuji Temple and Rishoto Pagoda also declined.
