The People of Jane Pit project has been as a collaborative effort to highlight and celebrate the stories of individuals connected to Jane Pit and the wider mining industry in Workington. Situated in a historically significant coalmining and steel manufacturing town, the project aimed to illuminate the impact of industrial growth on the community.
Known locally as ‘Annie’s Castle’ the engine house that remains standing at Jane Pit is the town’s last remnant of this industrial past, and became the focal point for celebrating the contributions of miners across generations. The endeavour sought to connect diverse groups, including 19th-century miners, contemporary residents, and youth.
These Minecraft models were created by primary students from St Joseph’s School in Workington, useing info from Helena Thompson Museum to inspire their models. Their imagination was allowed to run, enabling them to tell the stories they wanted to tell.
