Antemortem trauma
There are three categories of trauma that describe the relationship of the trauma to the death event: antemortem (before death), perimortem (around death) and post-mortem (after death) trauma. As fresh and dead bones react in different ways to the forces applied, these traumas can be distinguished based on the morphological characteristics exhibited by these injuries.
This model illustrates the characteristics of traumas occurred before death. As the bone is a living tissue, this type of trauma shows signs of healing in form of infectious reactions or new bone formation. The key features of antemortem trauma depend on the healing phase of the injury.
