Inspired by scientific instruments and neoclassical furniture styles of the 18th century, this game prop makes use of UV manipulation for all animations except the orbiting planets. To minimize draw calls, it uses three textures (albedo, normal and packed occlusion, specular, metallic) with model UVs arranged to allow animation by rotating them from the center. This required special attention to the shape of UVs as certain animations were linear (such as the lower gears in the cylinder and number dials) while others (such as the orrery face) were circular. Certain UV’s of moving parts were also “flipped over” to achieve movement clockwise and counter-clockwise. This special layout was also able to achieve high texel density despite less than optimal UV arrangement by overlapping UVs of identical model components.
