Avenger Air Defense System, designated AN/TWQ-1, is an American self-propelled surface-to-air missile system which provides mobile, short-range air defense protection for ground units against cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles, low-flying fixed-wing aircraft, and helicopters. The Avenger was originally developed for the United States Armed Forces and is currently used by the U.S. Army and USMC. For nearly 15 years the Avenger was the sole US airdefense platform. The Avenger A1 is the upgraded verison of the baseline model having improvements in several areas. The M2 machine gun has been replaced with a GAU-8 7.62mm Rotary gun which has a much higher rate of fire. Digital sighting system uses a improved IRST system that can track aircraft from up to 30km away.
