More model informationIron, England, 300-410AD At first glance this object could be a hammer or axe but it is actually a special type of anvil introduced to Britain by the Romans known as a ‘Mower’s anvil’. It was used by harvesters working in the fields to sharpen their scythes. The pointed end would be driven into the ground and the blunt end used as a small anvil to quickly repair bends and dents created while working. To prevent the anvil sinking further into the ground than desired while a scythe was hammered back into shape, a bar was passed through the hole to rest against the ground and create a wide surface area. This was found with the hammer that also appears as a 3D image on this site. Model by Historic England Geospatial Survey Team
